Data (Click the video to have this read to you)

'Data' is information gathered by observation, questioning or measurement.

For example, the cyberchase team did a survey, which uses questioning, to find out where the hacker was. They asked the citizens of Castleblanca if they had seen a tall, creepy man with a cape. Citizens could answer 'yes' or 'no.'

The cyberchase team then interpreted the data they collected to find the location of the hacker. Data is often organised in graphs or charts for analysis and may include facts, numbers or measurements. The cyberchase team turned the data they collected into two charts.

Using tallies, they compared how many people had seen the man with the cape, and how many had not seen him. They asked the people who said they had seen him, to point the location out on one of the town maps.

Even though people saw the man wearing the cape all over the place, the team analysed the data and noticed a pattern that lots of people saw him between Slime Street and Ooze Avenue.

Looking at the picture to the right, you will see the three important steps for collecting data. These are the steps the cyberchase team also followed.

In your books write down and answer these questions:

Do you think that the cyberchase team would be able to find the hacker if they did not do a survey?

Why/why not?

By having the cyberchase team look at the data, do you think their prediction will be correct?
